Willie Smelser

February 8, 1933 — May 2, 2025

Willie J. Smelser, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on May 2, 2025, at the age of 92. Born on February 8, 1933, in Beech Grove, Arkansas, Willie led a life rich in family, music, and community. A proud graduate of Lafe High School's Class of 1951, he went on to have a successful career as an industrial engineer at Emerson Electric, where he was respected for his dedication and expertise in drafting and tool design.

Willie's roots lay deep within his large farming family, the youngest of ten siblings, and he cherished the bonds forged during his upbringing. In addition to his professional life, he was known for his passion for music, particularly the guitar and banjo. Together with his longtime friend, Verlin Brown, Willie started a band called "Old Country." The duo delighted many with their performances at local venues such as The Collins Theatre, Senior Bees, and the Loose Caboose Festival, where they sang country, bluegrass, and Gospel music.

A member of Pruetts Chapel Methodist Church, Willie was known to be a warm, engaging individual who brought joy to those around him. Though he might come across as shy at first glance, his genuine love for storytelling and knack for humor made him a favorite among friends and caregivers alike.

Willie leaves behind a loving family that includes his son, Ricky (Filiberta) Smelser, and daughter, Kathy (David) Johnson, as well as his cherished grandchildren: Zuri Aguirre, Shannon Lantz, Michael Johnson, Heather (Nate) Pohl, Meagan (Everette) Lane, Edgar (Kateri) Aguirre, and Jennifer (Nick) Jones, and his 15 great-grandchildren. His legacy will continue to resonate through the many lives he touched.

Willie was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn Smelser; parents, Ernest and Ella (Dickerson) Smelser; grandson, Cody Brac Smelser; daughter-in-law, Melonie (Smith) Smelser; grandson-in-law, Samuel Lantz; his brothers, Bruce Smelser, Bert Smelser, and Thomas Smelser; and his sisters, Maxine Martin, Eula Ford, Erie Green, Zuline Ward, Marie McGarraugh, Mary Ruth Smelser, and Faye Partlow.

A graveside memorial service will be held at Greene County Memorial Gardens, the date and time will be announced. Family and friends are invited to gather to celebrate Willie's remarkable life, sharing in the joy and laughter that he so generously spread throughout his years.
