Walter Leon Johnson

June 1, 1936 — January 23, 2024

Walter Leon Johnson, peacefully passed from this life on January 23, 2024, at the age of 87 in his hometown of Lafe. Born on June 1, 1936, in nearby Jonesboro, Walter's life was marked by a strong work ethic, a passion for driving, and an enduring love for his family.

Walter's career as a professional truck driver spanned several decades, during which he thrived as an owner/operator. His dedication to his craft was evident in the countless miles he logged and the reputation he established as a reliable and skilled driver. Through the windshield, he witnessed the changing landscapes of America, traversing highways and byways with unwavering determination.

Prior to his life on the road, Walter spent several years working for Grumman Aeronautics as a Parts Expeditor. He was tasked with making sure all of the parts were ordered correctly, delivered in a timely manner, and made to fit exactly what was needed. He excelled at this profession, and he loved working in the field of aeronautics.

When Walter wasn't on the road, he found solace in his hobbies. With a deep admiration for speed and excitement, he enjoyed watching NASCAR, finding joy in the adrenaline of the races. Additionally, his hands were never idle, as he derived great satisfaction from tinkering and fixing various mechanical objects. Whether it was an old engine or a broken appliance, Walter possessed an innate ability to breathe life back into things.

Above all, Walter's greatest joy was his family. He leaves behind his children, Michael Johnson of Poplar Bluff, David (Angela) Johnson of Madisonville, Tennessee, and Julie (Michael) Benware of Lafe; nine grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Walter was preceded in death by his loving wife, Wanda Johnson; daughters, Janet Crow and Belinda Benton; son, Andrew Wayman; parents, Freeman and Theoda Johnson; and sister, Yvonne.
