Lorene Christine Stephens, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, departed from this world on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at the age of 97. Born on June 21, 1928, in Lafe, Lorene was a lifelong resident of the area, where she nurtured both her family and her community with boundless love and compassion.
Lorene graduated from Lafe High School and devoted her life to her family and community. On August 8, 1947, she married her forever love, Vernon Stephens, and together they created a beautiful life until his passing on October 11, 1988. Lorene and Vernon were the proud owner of Stephens Store, a cherished grocery establishment that served the community for many years. Known for her warmth and generosity, she became a familiar face, always ready with a kind word or a helping hand.
A devoted lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Lorene was actively involved in her faith community, where her devotion and spirit shone brightly for many years. Her love for flower gardening was evident in the enchanting hillside near the pond, which she lovingly adorned with vibrant blooms, a reflection of her nurturing character.
Her influence extended beyond the walls of her home and church; for years, Lorene contributed her time and energy at the voting booth during elections, embodying her commitment to civic duty and the community she cherished.
Lorene is survived by her three sons, Allen (Sheila) Stephens of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Gary (Linda) Stephens of Collierville, Tennessee, and Lindel (Janette) Stephens of Owasso, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Chris Bolick, Kirk Stephens, Matt Stephens, Jeff Stephens, Ashley Berner, and Jared Stephens; great-grandchildren, Abigail, William and Jacob Bolick, Ivy and Sydney Stephens Burnett, Garrett, William, and Everett Stephens, Hadley, Spencer Kate, and Evelyn Stephens, Everly and Elise Berner, Alaina, Aubrey, Adelynn and Andrew Stephens; brother-in-law, Charles "Buddy" Smith; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and other family and friends. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to family and community.
Lorene is preceded in death by her parents, Gus and Helen Hoelscher; husband of 41 years, Vernon Stephens; infant son, Jeffrey Stephens; daughter, Sandra Stephens; grandson, Glen Stephens; sisters, Lena Schutt, Emma Schlake, and Ida Hoelscher; and brothers, Ernest Hoelscher and Raymond Hoelscher.
Funeral services for Lorene will be held at her beloved St. John's Lutheran Church, where she so faithfully served, followed by a burial at St. John's Cemetery. The visitation will begin on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 1 PM with the funeral service, officiated by Pastor Aaron Neugebauer, beginning at 2 PM. Honored to serve as pallbearers are Stacy Speer, David Lange, Jeff Harmon, Greg Gerdes, Steve Mcleskey, and Shane Robinson.
As we say goodbye to Lorene, we remember her remarkable spirit, her unwavering love for her family, and her lifelong commitment to her community. She will be deeply missed, but her legacy will endure in the hearts of all who knew her.
