Joe Hamilton Odom Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, departed this life on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at the age of 83. Joe was born on June 15, 1942, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, to the late Joe, Sr. and Thelma Odom. He lived in Marion for a length of time and spent his later years in Paragould where he touched the lives of all who knew him.

Joe graduated from Belzoni High School in 1960, after which he pursued further education at Delta Junior College (now Mississippi Delta Community College), earning an associate's degree. His dedication to service led him to the United States Air Force, where he completed basic training before becoming a Reservist. He then proudly served as Pilot and Captain of West Memphis Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, embodying a spirit of commitment and dedication to his country.

On October 16, 1964, Joe married his beloved wife, Sarah Staten Odom. Together, they built a life steeped in love and companionship that would stand the test of time. They were blessed with two daughters and thoroughly enjoyed moments spent with their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Joe's family was his pride and joy, and he was a steadfast protector and provider, always ensuring that every family gathering was filled with joy and laughter.

For over 32 years, Joe dedicated his professional life to the railroad, working for Missouri Pacific Railroad which later became Union Pacific Railroad. He spent most of that time as a Switchman and Conductor, where his commitment to duty and remarkable work ethic left a lasting impact. He was honored to have served as Secretary and Treasurer of Local 950 of the United Transportation Union for 28 years.

A man of diverse interests, Joe loved to explore the world-traveling to new places and savoring the cuisine offered at fine restaurants. He had a passion for flying and trout fishing, and his love for gardening found him eagerly tending to his tomato plants during the growing season. A history enthusiast, Joe cherished learning about the past and sharing stories that connected generations.

Joe was a valued member of Pruett's Chapel Methodist Church, where he shared his faith and warm spirit with his community. He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Sarah Odom; daughters, Laura Cribbs of Paragould and Angie (Bill) Garner of Hot Springs; grandchildren, Tyler (Kayla) Cribbs, Taylor (Trase) Davis, Zach Garner, and Courtney Garner, and great-granddaughters, Emma Davis, Ryan Davis, and Phoebe Aldridge. He also leaves behind his loving sister, Legatha Spelbring; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Don and Margie Fuller; sisters-in-law, Judy Odom, Vivien Odom, and Becky Jarman; and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Floyd and Elsie Staten; brothers, James Odom and Donny Odom; brothers-in-law, Shel Spelbring, Alvin Staten, and Perry Jarman; sister-in-law, Donna Staten; and nephews, Jeff Fuller and Bobby Spelbring.

Joe's life will be celebrated at Heath Funeral Home on Saturday, June 6, 2026. A visitation will begin at 3 PM with a memorial service to follow at 4 PM with Pastor Jerry Pentecost officiating. We invite all who knew Joe to come together to celebrate a life well-lived and to share cherished memories of this remarkable man. Honorary Pallbearers will be current and former employees of Union Pacific Railroad. In memory of Joe, please send memorials to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Legacy Hospice.

Joe Hamilton Odom Jr. will be deeply missed, yet the love and kindness he bestowed upon his family and friends will continue to resonate for generations to come.
