James Freeman Shipman, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and devoted member of the Greene County community, passed from this life peacefully on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on March 8, 1939, at the Greene and Craighead County line, James dedicated his life to farming, a passion he embraced from the tender age of nine. He cultivated the land for over sixty years, a testament to his unwavering commitment and skill - a remarkable feat as he never lost a crop throughout his long career.
In a beautiful union of love and faith, James married Emma Orick on October 5, 1957, at Warren's Chapel Methodist Church in Walcott. He proudly became the patriarch of a family who adored him. His devotion extended not only to Emma and his family but also to the Lord, Jesus, whom he served faithfully. In fact, he rarely missed a service throughout his life. He took great pride in being the caretaker of the church and cemetery, a role he fulfilled with grace and dedication until his passing.
James was an avid lover of the outdoors; he found joy in fishing, turkey hunting, and deer hunting. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, including time at the cabin, working on the farm, and sharing laughter with loved ones. Later in life, he relished attending races, becoming a supportive presence for his grandchildren as they pursued their excitement in the world of racing. On most Saturday nights, he could be found providing security at Crowley's Ridge Raceway, where his warm humor and friendly presence left an impression on everyone he met.
A true servant at heart, James was elected by the citizens as a Greene County Constable for over 40 years, serving the Delaplaine community and Greene County with honor and integrity. He was known for his quick response, often addressing situations independently before law enforcement could arrive. He became a pillar in the community known for his integrity, kindness, and unmistakable handlebar mustache.
James was a selfless and generous man, often using his own time and resources to assist those in need. A staunch believer in taking a day of rest, he refrained from working on Sundays but never hesitated to lend a helping hand, whether it was fixing a neighbor's equipment, bringing in crops, or giving someone a lift somewhere. He was a tireless worker and a man who spent his life giving back to the community. Above all, he treasured time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and he is leaving behind a legacy of love.
James leaves behind his loving wife of 67 years, Emma Shipman; their son, David (Germelyn) Shipman; their daughter, Lou (James) Shipman Gregery; grandchildren, DJ (Leah) Shipman, Geoffrey (Megan) Eubanks, Jordan (Tyler Smith) Shipman, Tiffany (Ryan) Curtis, Jacob (Hailee) Textor-Shipman, Taylor Shipman, Mikko Landicho, and Ansei Landicho; and great-grandchildren, Layne, Luke, Leo Mack, Jacob, Drake, Miles, Zaiden, Tucker, Max, Nevaeh, and Watson. He is also survived by his brother, Jerry (Linda) Shipman; sister, Patricia (Jerry) Lenderman; numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces; and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Luther and Cora Gramling Shipman, and siblings, Sybil, Deronda, J.M., Lucille, Lee, Mary, Nadine, Fanny, and Betty Lou.
