Garland Denovan Smith

Garland Smith, 87, of Paragould, departed this life on Thursday, October 20, 2011, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. He was born February 12, 1924 in Beech Grove the son of the late Lester and Beatrice Smith. His brother, Arlon Smith of Flint, Michigan and two sisters, Carolyn Heineman of St. Charles, Missouri and Janice Smith of Paragould preceded him in death. He lived in Greene County and touched the lives of many children. Mr. Smith was an elementary school teacher at Light, Walcott and Beech Grove. He then was principal and taught at Stanford Elementary School for forty-two years. He also worked toward his master’s degree at Arkansas State College. Mr. Smith was a member of Griffin Memorial United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Betty, of the home; brother, Carlton Smith of Beech Grove; niece, Debby Camp and her sons, Shannon and Ryan Underwood of Paragould; niece Pam Callahan and her sons, Aaron and Shane Callahan of St. Charles, Missouri; nephew Greg Smith and his daughters, Stacy and Erin of Flint, Michigan; and nephew, Stephen Smith of Flint, Michigan. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:15 AM, Monday, at Heath Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Linwood Cemetery, 11:30 AM, Monday with L.R. Smith officiating.
