Burl Poe

Burl Poe, 88, formerly of Marmaduke, Ar, went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 25, 2009. He was born on July 22, 1921 in Craighead county. He was a WWII veteran where he served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1943-1946 with the 1st Division in the Pacific. He fought to take many islands including Okinawa and Guadalcanal. He married the love of his life, Violet Markin in 1946. He moved to Greene county in 1952. Burl was saved and baptized in 1955 and faithfully served as deacon in Mt. Hebron Baptist church and Marmaduke First Baptist church where he was a member. His past includes many first for the town of Marmaduke, which he came to love. Besides being a former mayor, he was also the first Boy Scout Master, one of the founders of the youth baseball program, formed and coached the first men’s softball team, kept the clock at the basketball games for 31 years, and even found time to coach in the Upward Bound program at his church. He was preceded in death by his mother Altha, his twin brother Earl, and his beloved wife of 58 years Violet. He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-laws Melvin and Darylon Poe of Union City Tn., David and Nancy Poe of Paragould, Ar., and Rick and Kim Poe of Bryant, Ar. One sister, Edna Beardsley of Flint Mi. One brother, Leroy Poe of Monette Ar. Four grandchildren, Melanie Martin, Brad Poe, Shaniece Gipson, and Mikah Oxner. Five great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Martin, Blake and Lexi Gipson, Jace Pickens, and one that will arrive next April. Many nieces and nephews and a host beloved friends including his adopted family Tim, Janet, Nathan, and Nick Stone. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6:00-9:00 P.M. at the Marmaduke 1st Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Marmaduke.
