U.S. Veteran

Lewis Rice, age 99, of Peach Orchard was born October 20, 1912, in the Denman Community on the Greene/Randolph County-line and departed this life on August 9, 2012. He was the son of Thomas Blackmon Rice and Emma Forehand Rice. He married Belle Gates on September 12, 1940. She preceded him in death on April 14, 1984. He was also preceded in death by his twin brother, Tom Rice on March 28, 2012.

Lewis was preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings: Floria, Lively, Hite, Tom (twin), Wendell, Redmon, Everett, Fay, Lois, Buster Rice.

He was born the year the TItantic sank, Oreos and Lifesavers were invented, Girl Scouts were created and the town of Delaplaine was founded.

Lewis was a US Navy World War II veteran, member of the Delaplaine Baptist Church, and a retired farmer.

He is survived by his son, Frankie and Peggy Rice of Delaplaine, grand-daughter, Tikka and Chuck Davis of Stanford, grandson, Corey and Audumn Rice of Pocahontas and great grand-daughters, Madison Rice of Ithaca, New York, Jodi Davis of Stanford, Emma and Lucy Rice of Pocahontas, also sister-in-law, Elwanda Gates.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Saturday, at Heath Funeral Home. His life will be celebrated Sunday at 2:00 P.M. at Heath Colonial Chapel with Rev. Adam Bruton officiating. Interment will follow at Greene County Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Junior Dinkins, Fred Carter, Keith Mosbey, Kenneth Arnold, Randy Eveland, and Larry Clark. Honorary pallbearers: Lanty Frazier, Jr., Gary Bounds, John Ed Wilkinson, Carroll Graham, Sol Eveland.
